Tasty Homemade Tortillas

tortillas foldedA few months ago I was at my mom’s house for a family gathering and my sister-in-law made some yummy homemade tortillas. Tortillas often come in handy at my home and I have always used the store-bought ones out of convenience. Well, little did I know how EASY they are to make and surely they are much better for you then the store-bought kind. They only require four ingredients; all which you probably already have tucked away in your pantry…it does not get much better than that! The recipe I use only makes 8 tortillas so I recommend doubling or even tripling the recipe so that you can freeze some for future use. I do get busy as a mama to an energetic toddler so it’s nice to have a homemade treat that I can easily pull out of freezer on those oh-so busy days— And trust me, they are good…you will want to have some on hand for later!

To get started you will need a few ingredients:

2 cups of all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon of salt

¾ cup of hot water

3 tablespoons of olive oil

{Remember to plan accordingly if you are making a double or a triple batch :)}

First mix together the flour and salt in a large bowl.

Then add the hot water and olive oil. I find that the dough comes together best with hot water.  If the dough seems too dry then add a little more oil. I usually end up adding about a teaspoon more.

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1 minute or until it’s smooth. You can add a little more water or flour at this point to get the right consistency.

Then break the dough into eight sections.  On that same lightly floured surface roll out each section into a 7-inch circle.  Mine always end up a little bit on the smaller side ;).

Finally it is time to cook them {sorry I did not get a good picture of this step]! Coat a large non-stick pan with cooking spray. Cook the tortillas over medium heat for about 1 minute on each side. Use a fork to pop the bubbles that form.


The end result– warm, yummmmmy tortillas that are sure to please just about anyone! I love them, my husband does too and our 1 ½ year old son gobbles them up every time! The extra’s store well in a large gallon size Ziploc bag.

I only wish I would have discovered these sooner! It’s really hard to go back to the store-bought kind once you try these tasty tortillas.  ENJOY and stay tuned in the near future for a dinner meal idea using these tortillas!


Homemade Tortillas

Yield: 8 Tortillas



2 cups all-purpose flour

½  teaspoon salt

¾ cup water

3 tablespoons olive oil

Directions: Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the water and olive oil and stir until combined. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1 minute. Add extra water or flour if needed to make a smooth dough. Divide the dough into eight sections and using a lightly floured surface, roll out each section into a 7-inch circle. Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and cook the tortillas for about 1 minute on each side or until lightly browned. Remove and serve warm or store in a large Ziploc bag.
